Excise and Taxation Department seizes 23 loaded vehicles with the introduction of intra-state e-way bill system from June 1, businessmen/traders and others have found new ways of evading tax.

Under a special campaign to keep an eye on the movement of goods particularly in the iron and steel trade, the mobile wing (MW) of the Excise and Taxation Department detained 23 vehicles loaded with goods during the last 24 hours.

HPS Ghotra, Joint Director (Investigation), Jalandhar Division, who takes care of Ludhiana and Amritsar, said, Out of these 23 vehicles, nine were loaded with finished goods from Mandi Gobindgarh while another 14 vehicles carrying iron scrap were going to Mandi Gobindgarh.

“The total value of the stocks is Rs 78 lakh, which will invite tax and penalty of Rs 28 lakh from the department,” he added.

“If tax evaders feel that they will continue with their activities (sending stocks without bills/documents) and department will not take any action, then they are wrong. Now, they are not just going to pay taxes, but the penalty amount too,” he said.

The MW, Ludhiana, impounded 15 vehicles, the MW, Hoshiarpur, four vehicles and the remaining four vehicles were seized by the MW, Jalandhar, he added.

Officers of all the three wings, including Magnesh Sethi, Maj Manmohan Singh (retd), Inderjeet Nagpal, Gulshan Huria, Pawan Umar, Devinder Pannu and Sandeep Sharma, went on checking and detained vehicles, said Ghotra.

Those into tax-evasion have already found other means of transport like horse-carts to send goods from one place to another. As non-motorised vehicles do not require e-way bill, tax evaders have been sending stocks, which include furniture, yarn and woollen items, on tongas.

“The Central government needs to keep a check on the movement of non-motorised vehicles or these should also be included under the ambit of e-way bill system. If there is no check, the government will suffer huge revenue losses,” said Badish Jindal, president of the Federation of Punjab Small Industries Association (FOPSIA).
