Experts and businesses on Tuesday emphasised on maintaining transparency and sharing responsibility to ensure sustainability for the readymade garment sector in Bangladesh.

Fifty-nine garment factories closed and 25,900 workers lost their jobs in the last seven months, according to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Rubana Huq, who said most of these were small and medium enterprises that failed to strictly maintain compliance strictly and pay their workers under the new wage structure.

The Lancang-Mekong Textile and Apparel Cooperation Summit was held on October 17 in Shengze county, in Jiangsu province. It was hosted by China National Textile and Apparel Council, and the Sub-Council of Textile Industry, CCPIT. 600 guests from 24 countries and regions, and representatives from 5 countries along the Mekong River participated in the summit.

Workers who lose their jobs could end up in the entertainment or service industries and be exposed to sexual exploitation.
